What is the best tool to use to prune a crepe myrtle?

We just moved into a house a little less than a year ago and this is the first time I will be pruning our Crepe Myrtle. It wasn't pruned last year and there are a lot of suckers and twigs growing from the branches. I just want to know what instrument is best used to keep from injuring the tree, thanks!!
